Oikos Greek Yogurt

I have to be honest, the very first time I tried Greek Yogurt, I didn't like it. It was the nutritionals that got me coming back for more, and now I really enjoy it! It's got a tang to it, which I wasn't used to. But I started by adding a little drizzle of honey (or agave), mixing in some fruit or granola, and have really come to love it, even on its own. Heck, crumble in a warm brownie or cookie and I'll bet you'll eat it :) And what a great protein-boost to that dessert!

As I mentioned in my last post, Kristina from Stoneyfield Farm was nice enough to offer up some coupons to try Oikos. Who am I kidding, I've definitely had it before, but I'm not one to turn down free greek yogurt :) It is the only organic greek yogurt on the market! For those unfamiliar with greek yogurt, it is thicker than regular yogurt as it has been strained to remove the whey. Which I'll be honest, confuses me, as I thought the protein was in the whey... yet greek yogurt has easily 3x the amount of protein than other yogurts. Can anyone clear this up for me? I did learn something from their website--strained yogurt stays fresher longer, and is less likely to curdle when cooked! Ok, on to the yogurt...

With my free coupons, I picked up one of each flavor: plain, honey (not pictured), vanilla, and blueberry. While the plain had the tart/tang normally associated with greek yogurt, the flavored variations did not. Those would be another good starting point if you're just trying them out for the first time. They were all thick, creamy, and delicious! The flavored ones weren't too sweet (the honey had a nice subtle flavor-- I didn't even realize there was actual honey on the bottom until i got there!) and all had under 20g sugar. I like the flavored ones when i'm on the go, or attempt to have it for dessert if my dinner isn't particularly heavy on protein. Otherwise I normally stick to plain and add whatever fruit I have around.

Besides wanting a few more actual blueberries in the blueberry yogurt, the only drawback is price. I usually stick to what's on sale, or Trader Joe's 2% (couldn't believe the difference from 0%!!), so Oikos is a splurge or coupon purchase for me. I really can't pick a favorite between Fage, Chiobani, Oikos, TJ's... I've come to love them all! Icelandic yogurt (Skyr.is or siggi's) might win out if it weren't for the cost, but right now I'm a post-doc in Boston. (aka not swimming in it!)

Thanks again Kristina, I love your greek yogurt!! Ok everyone, what are you waiting for?? Once you go greek, you'll never go back ;-) Who's with me??

LOVE Greek yogurt! I agree about the 2% - it's shockingly more rich than 0%!

Fun!! :-)

I had the same feelings! Its very good, but so pricey! I don't know how they can compete! I guess Oikos being organic makes it much more $$$.

I need to jump on the greek yogurt bandwagon, that is for sure!

I love stoneyfield farms greek yogurt. I only like honey though. The Chobani brand wasn't as good.
If the lady rep from stoneyfield is reading this, can we get some greek yogurt to come to the cape? Please? LOL

I love yogurt. I need to try this sometime!

I love greek yogurt, and will never gave it up just yet. I always get the plain TJ's 2% and my husband get the non fat one, but I agree with you, I couldn't tell the different either.
Cheers,

yayyy for greek yogurt!! there's some protein in the whey that's strained out, but it's mostly calcium. the reason there's more protein in greek yog than in regular is because it's concentrated -- there's more yogurt solidness in 1/2 cup of Greek than in 1/2 cup of regular. make sense?

the whey protein you can buy goes through a different process to isolate/concentrate the protein.

umm, who's the dairy nerd (pointing at self ...)

Yes I agree, I love greek yogurt too. I have been getting the Chiobani since it goes on sale a lot in my neck of the woods.

I also have been loving Wallaby Organic Down Under yogurt lately. It is totally opposite from the thick Greek yogurt. It is much thinner, but creamy at the same time. They just came out with a new flavor... Pink Grapefruit! I know, different, right? It is awesome, you have to try it :)

i do love greek yogurt, but i'm not a complete convert yet. every once in a while i go back to Publix yogurt (wildberry crumb cake and caramel creme flavors are so good!), but greek yogurt is definitely more filling and satisfying :)

I've been buying the trader joe's brand of greek yogurt, I will look for oikos the next time I'm in the store.

I agree - once you get into greek yogurt, it's hard to go back!

I've never tried Greek yogurt, which I'll have to do since I eat yogurt every day! Thanks for the review!

Oh, I totally agree! Now that I've had greek yogurt, the regular stuff just isn't as satisfying.

I used to buy the 0%, 'till I was at the store and all they had was the 2%, which is OMG! so fantastic! I was shocked how creamy and rich and wonderful it was! Totally worth those tiny extra fat grams!

I'm with you! Greek yogurt has completely spoiled me - regular yogurt just doesn't do the trick anymore.

I'm in agreement about the price of many brands - what's up with that? I tried Sky.is and agree that it is one of the best greek yogurt brands I've tried.

Me! Love to be the controller of the yogurt mix-ins. Hubby loved all the flavored ones.

I really like Greek yogurt and usually go with the TJ's brand, for price reasons. I have been known to grab a flavored chobani on the go though. I like mixing the greek yogurt in with some canned pumpking or applesauce, which I usually have on hand. Mix in some cinnamon and it's a great snack!

I agree, "once you go Greek you'll never go back," haha. And I prefer the plain, too.

p.s. I added you to my blogroll; prehaps we can be blog buddies? hehe

amen. greek is the way to go. It's all greek to me! (gosh that was a bad joke)
it's so sad that those yogurts are so outrageously expensive here in singapore though. the first thing I'm sinking my teeth into is a nice tub of Fage when I return to America.

Looks tasty! I have yet to try Greek yogurt!

I love oikos, but yeah... I can't buy it without coupons. It's a million times more expensive than anything else. Glad you enjoyed your freebies :)
When's almond butter coming? I can't wait!!! ;)

I love Oikos too. I've also gotten to the point where I can just eat it plain.

I love Greek yogurt and the fact that it contains so much protein! I just wish it weren't so expensive!

I'm so in love with greek yogurt and use it all the time.

It is so true - once you go Greek, you'll never go back! Love love love it. I usually buy TJ's as it's the cheapest, but I really don't think my body is liking the dose of yogurt I've given it lately. I went crazy with my Oikos coupons, and after a month of no dairy, my stomach is like..."wha-huh?" Oh well, I just love it so much, and I'm not passing up free Greek yogurt!

Here is some helpful info. I was confused about the protein content as well, and Sarah (Tales of Expansion) sent me this link:

I love greek yogurt now too - because of the low carb content - I just couldn't find the Oikos near me, and I've heard that Fage is cheaper. :D

I finally got around to using ONE of my coupons this weekend...YAY for free Greek Yogurt! I tried the Oikos vanilla...I liked how thick it was. But I'm with you on TJ's, just can't beat the price. I will have to try the 2%!

hey i got that little package too! (hence my giveaway) I think the plain flavor tastes like bile, but if you doctor it up its awesome

Oh gosh, when I tried my first Greek yogurt I nearly gagged! It was a plain Fage with grape jam...I am shuddering just thinking about it. Now I'm in love! And totally with you on never going back to regular yogurt. I tried some Better than Whey samples and, while I liked it overall, I found myself CRAVING the tang!! Holla!!

P.S. Your security code was "shazilas" - I find it to be an awesome word and may start using it more often.

They are sending me some coupons too, though I've never tried Oikos before. I enjoyed your post!

I'm sorry but I am Greek and live in Greece and find it crazy that an American company is selling thick yogurt as "Greek" yogurt... yogurt made from cows milked in Greece is Greek yogurt....

I too like the Oikos and was eating it for a few weeks, but was experiencing symptoms that I suffer when I consume gluten. I read on the internet that Oikos was GF, so I kept eating it. After about 3 weeks I finally stopped and the symptoms went away. Oikos either has gluten or something else that (for me anyway) causes gluten-like symptoms.

I have been eating Fage now for a few weeks and have had no problems.

Has anybody had problems with Oikos?

Anon- I am not aware of any issues concerning Oikos and gluten, sorry!
