A New Root

Turnips, friend or foe?

Gorgeous for sure, I had picked one up at the farmers market to try (I owed it to this root veggie, as I [heart] all its cousins). I took it home, found a recipe to try, and then forgot as it sat in my fridge... oops. Luckily all was not lost when I uncovered it, and I made some Honey-Glazed Turnip Wedges.

Verdict? They were ok, I could definately taste the turnip... not my favorite root, but I think it would have fun playing with the rest. How about you-- anyone have a favorite way they like to use this veggie??

Turnips = foe :(

I've tried to like them so many times. I think it's hereditary - my dad HATES them.

I don't eat many turnips? So I couldn't tell ya the best way to prepare them!

Thanks for the tip on squash cutting! I'll definitely give that microwaving a go!

Happy Wednesday!

Turnips = foe. I've never found a way to cook them where they were actually enjoyable.

Never tried the turnips! Bummer that they didn't turn out too yummy. Sounds like you had a good plan of attack too!

Hell no! No matter how they're cooked, I can't do turnips.
Or brussel sprouts! Anyways, I commend you for trying!

I like putting them in soups. It adds some nice vegetal flavour to the soup and softens up nicely. They're also pretty good pickled.

the only kind of turnip i have often is daikon, or "mooli" - and i guess that's not really turnip, but still delicious!

I ADORE TURNIPS...on other people's plates.

So even honey can't save the turnip? Well that's a shame. I've never had one, so I'll have to try it. I like any veggie, so hopefully they'll be good :)

Thanks for your good trip wishes too :)

Great Idea - I actually had something very similar 2 weeks ago. I had maple glazed turnip with some ginger as well. Very yummy.
thanks for sharing

I almost bought turnips this weekend but chickened out. Apparently I did myself a favor after reading everyone's comments. Such a shame turnips seems like they would be good in theory. Oh well.

I have some turnips in the fridge from our CSA basket last week that I've been hoping will magically disappear as they are definitely not my favorite root vegetable either. Unfortunately, they keep sitting in the fridge stubbornly refusing to disappear.

turnips are the enemy. i just can't figure out a way to like 'em.

now parsnips, on the other hand, there's a root i can really get behind.

Wow, a veggie I've never tried. I guess I should, but...they seem kinda unappealing.

fry 'em! or put a cream sauce over them... everything tastes better fried or with a cream sauce!

Turnips are another thing that I do not use too often. I have used them in soups and stews and they are nice.

I like to add turnips to a combination of roasted root vegetables and onions, garlic, and rosemary-- they get really caramelized and tasty.
The recipe sounds interesting- I wonder if a bit of orange or lemon zest might have helped the flavor?

Turnips are definitely an acquired taste. I like to julienne them and saute them for a fall salad with apples and a cider vinagrette, it softens the initial blow.
