My First Taste of Boston

* a break from regularly scheduled programming *

I've gotten a few questions about what I do, so I thought I'd address them a bit today--I hope everyone doesn't mind! Plus I have a TON of leftovers, so no new meal tonight... I'm a science geek, and just defended my dissertation in August. Read: I can now add the letters Ph.D. after my name!!!! Woah, hasn't really set in yet. I've been in school all my life, so to no longer be considered a student is even stranger. Hmm, as to exactly what I do everyday, it's research, loosely filed under the heading "biomedical". My graduate work bridged the gap between immunology (a study of the system responsible for dealing with foreign invaders) and cancer. I moved to Boston for my post-doctoral research, which in science-speak is really just a way to get more experience before you get a real job. What I'll be doing here is more along the lines of examining ways T cells (one of cells of our immune system) interact with other cells in their response to various offenders (like the flu). Have I lost you all yet? Hope not!!

Let's get back to my new digs :) What have I learned so far?

The Charles

1. Boston drivers are CRAZY. I will not ride my bike in the city (boo).
2. The Charles is much prettier than the Schuykill (although I hear it's not any cleaner!)
3. I love walking everywhere. (much better than driving from place to place)
4. Fall is my favorite season. (but i already knew that!! :))

Jamaica Pond

Despite all my craziness in my new kitchen, the second night here I discovered there's an awesome Thai place right around the corner!! Still sooo many things to explore, so any of you Beantown readers in the know... please dish :)

Welcome to Boston!! Brown Sugar is one of the best! I moved to Boston about a year and a half ago and Yelp was a major life-saver for finding restaurants to try.

First off, congrats on your Ph.D. I work at a university, so I know the effort you put in -- and that's no small thing.

Hope you enjoy Boston and the postdoc work!

hahaha my dad always called Boston the "point and shoot theory", don't look just point the car where you want to go and shoot, hit the gas! Believe it or not, I think Boston drivers are really good drivers, just aggressive! I amazed how slow everyone drives in SC ;) The charles water is oh so dirty- hence the song, love that dirty water :). What a cool job you have!

Congrats on your PhD...and on finishing in only five years! My husband is a doctoral student in a biomedical-ish field, too. Your field amazes me.

Congratulations on your Ph.D.! Your line of research fascinates me as well. (My background is also science.) Just popped by to pass on an e-award to you. Visit my blog to check it out. Congrats again, and good luck in this new chapter of your life.

Immunology? Sweet. You didn't lose me at all, I had to take a whole class on cell responses and cancer. I wonder how many other food blogger doctors there are out here. We can make a network :) Congrats!

I think I'll make everyone call me Dr. Gena for a few months, just so it sets in. Is your PhD in immunology or micro/immuno?

I'll pass on the immunology, despite understanding it quite well due to the heavy emphasis on it in my department. I however, am a virologist, having an interest in cancer, but in viral oncogenesis.

morning! wow, what a career. thank you for doing that research, for all of our sakes.

re: the scooggely (as I like to pronounce it). in my opinion it is much dirtier than the charles! so funny that we are kindof switching places. you are here from pa, and i am moving to pa from 30 minutes from where you moved to. so random!

Congrats on the PhD! Also congrats on moving to my favorite city :)

I've been in the Back Bay for six years and I am a wealth of city information. I'm a super foodie too! So anytime you need ANYTHING, email me. I'm the go-to for recommendations for all my friends and co-workers.

Good call on Brown Sugar :)

(p.s. I love your blog)

Yay! Thank you for the what you do post! :) and CONGRATS on defending your dissert!!! yelp is good and CitySearch is also a great search engine for restaurants and anything else (hair cuts, etc.)-- you can see if places offer specials, or first time customer discounts, etc.!! wooohooo.

Natasha- thanks so much!! humbled :)

Gena- it was in immunology, but i spent quite some time pondering viral oncogenesis (especially MMTV, EBV, and KSHV)!!

Julie- I'll totally hit you up :)

how had i not discovered yelp yet?!?

oh my good god - you didn't know about yelp??

well, it sounds like you live in the Fenway area.

1) Canestaro has AMAZING steak bombs.
2) The Amazing Superstore is right around the corner ;)
3) Deluxe in the South End is an awesome dive. Cash only - local favorite.
4) Pour House on Boylston. Enough said. Just watch out for the kids on the weekend nights.
5) Sorrelina has the best dish in the city - the Kobe Meatballs (and they are worth every expensive penny). Sister restaurant "Teatro" has the best mussels in the city. Your wallet will thank me more for that.
6) B&G Oysters has the best lobster roll in the world.
7) The closest club to you "Saint" isn't allll that bad if you want to bring your girls and dance.
8) Take advantage of the Tuesday and Friday Farmer's Market in Copley until it's gone (after Thanksgiving)
9) If you love mac n cheese - check out the Publick House on the C Line in Brookline - they have the best you'll find anywhere (mac n bacon, mac n ANYTHING) and it's worth the T ride.
10) I can't just give you 10.
